Release Date Confirmed: September 9, 2026
So S-GAME finally dropped the real release date September 9 2026 and honestly I screamed a little when I saw the announcement and I'm not ashamed to admit it. It's launching on PS5 and PC through Steam on the same day which is pretty much exactly what everyone was hoping for. And pre-orders should go live sometime this summer but they haven't said exactly when yet which is kind of annoying tbh cause I wanna give them my money right now. But honestly I've been waiting for this game since the first teaser back in 2023 and now that there's an actual date on the calendar it all feels real you know and I'm already clearing my schedule for launch week and I told my friends I'm basically dead to the world for like two weeks and they're gonna have to accept it and deal with it or whatever
Gameplay Showcase at Summer Game Fest 2025
Phantom Blade Zero showed up big at Summer Game Fest 2025 with an extended gameplay demo and ngl I watched the whole thing like 5 times in a row and kept pausing to look at details. And they showed the Seven Judgments boss fight which looked absolutely brutal like the kind of fight where you die 30 times before it even starts to make sense and the Serpent's Maw Swamp region with this really moody creepy atmosphere and the lighting was honestly chef's kiss and we also got the first look at the Arm Cannon weapon type. And I was not expecting ranged weapons at all. It seems like a totally new way to play and I'm honestly really curious how it fits into the whole Sha-Chi system and whether it'll feel as good as the melee combat or if it's more of a situational thing and most games mess up ranged combat in a melee focused game but maybe S-GAME figured it out because they seem to actually care about making everything feel good
Year of the Snake Trailer Debuts New Boss
For Lunar New Year 2025 S-GAME dropped the Year of the Snake trailer and the Snake Sovereign boss looks absolutely insane honestly and I've watched the trailer probably 20 times now and I keep noticing new things each time which is either really cool or really obsessive and I'm not sure which. The fight takes place in the Serpent's Maw Swamp which makes sense thematically and the boss uses these whip-like attacks that have crazy long range like halfway across the arena and the arena itself probably plays into the fight mechanics somehow cause I've seen some environmental interactions in the demo footage and I love when bosses use the environment like that instead of just being in a boring flat room. And the visual design of the Snake Sovereign is really something else. I can already tell this fight is gonna take me like 50 tries minimum and I'm gonna hate every single attempt but also love it at the same time which is the true soulslike experience tbh
S-GAME Interview: Combat Design Philosophy
So the creative director at S-GAME did this really interesting interview about the Sha-Chi combat system and basically they studied Sekiro's posture system and old school Chinese martial arts cinema and tried to mash those together into something new and I love that they actually named their influences instead of pretending they invented everything from scratch like some devs do. The whole idea was to make a combat system that rewards aggression but doesn't punish mistakes too harshly. And that's honestly why I think the game feels so good to play even when you're bad at it. The dual Brutal versus Killer Move system came from wanting to add actual decision making to reactive combat instead of just parrying everything and blocking and dodging and all that. And apparently the team went through like 30 different prototypes before they landed on the current system which is pretty wild when you think about it and makes me wonder what those other 29 versions looked like and how many of them were complete disasters that nobody will ever see
ChinaJoy 2025 Demo Opens for Public
Phantom Blade Zero had a playable demo at ChinaJoy 2025 and this was the first time regular people could actually get their hands on the game and I remember watching the livestreams and being so jealous I almost booked a flight to Shanghai which would have been completely insane. The demo had the opening area the Ruined Outskirts and the Ogre Hammer Lord boss which I've heard is really tough for a first boss. And they let people try three weapons. Early impressions from people who played it were pretty much all positive and they praised the responsive combat and the visual quality on UE5 and the general vibe was that this game is actually real and it's actually good which was a huge relief because so many games look good in trailers and then play like garbage. And tbh I'm a little jealous of everyone who got to play it early cause I was stuck at home watching livestreams of the demo like everyone else and the FOMO was real
Phantom Blade Zero Official Reveal Trailer
the first official trailer for Phantom Blade Zero dropped at Gamescom 2023 and honestly it was one of those trailers where you watch it once and immediately rewatch it three more times and then send it to all your friends who don't even play games but you need someone to share the hype with. It showed the dark fantasy setting and the Sha-Chi combat and the protagonist Soul and the reception was massive and everyone was talking about the stylish action sequences and those UE5 visuals and I remember thinking there's no way the actual game looks this good it has to be pre-rendered or something. But looking back at it now you can really see how much the game has evolved and improved since that first reveal and the trailers since then have actually looked even better somehow. And I still go back and watch that trailer sometimes cause the music and the editing are just so good and it gives me chills every single time like it's the first time watching it
